High Blood Pressure Danger Signals You Must Know

Your face a battle against a silent Killer! High blood pressure warning signs are very difficult to identify. That is why many look upon high blood pressure as the silent killer. It seldom exhibits any easily identifiable symptoms! A startling fact is that millions of people suffer with this dangerous health problem without knowing it.

This is not a static situation. Undiagnosed high blood pressure increases slowly over time. An important part of the battle against high blood pressure is to have it checked regularly, especially if you fall into the certain racial or age groups.

The fact that high blood pressure is hard to spot is bad enough, but 90% of the time its cause is unknown. When the cause of high blood pressure is unknown it is called essential hypertension. The word hypertension is the medical term used to describe high blood pressure.

In addition to essential hypertension, where the cause is not known, there is secondary hypertension. That is when high blood pressure is caused by a disease or other physical problem. Common causes are kidney or thyroid disease.

A wide range of factors are associated with high blood pressure. They include genetics, age, race, stress, obesity, smoking, a high- salt diet, smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, and a lifestyle that includes very little exercise. Can you see that almost everyone could fall into one of those danger groups?

That is the prime reason regular blood pressure checks are so important. Only when high blood pressure gets very severe do symptoms become obvious. Warning signs you must be aware of can include nosebleeds, racing or irregular heartbeat, headaches, and dizziness.

You feel great and you have none of the warning signs, so you have no worry about high blood pressure, right? Oh no, it's a huge mistake to conclude that you don t have high blood pressure because you don't have any symptoms you can identify. The only way you know for sure is to measure your blood pressure on a regular basis.

Blood pressure machines are very inexpensive and easy to use. You have no excuse for letting your blood pressure get out of control. It must be measured regularly.

Take your blood pressure seriously. Allowed to increase untreated, it can cause some nasty health problems, including heart attack, stroke, kidney damage, and blindness. Just the thought of those conditions should motivate you to take better care of your health

Your high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol are a pair of danger signals that both warn of possible future heart problems. Remember, we are talking about a silent killer. You will not be able to tell if you have either high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol without measuring or medical examination. Your blood pressure and blood must be tested. Both measurements are done routinely if you have regular health check-ups.

A blood pressure machine is as close as your nearest pharmacy or Wal-Mart. Blood pressure and cholesterol screenings are often offered at community health centers. Call your city government office for information.

Now is the time to go to war against the silent killer. You can successfully attack high blood pressure with regular blood pressure readings. Remember, in this battle you are an army of one. You must take action to save yourself.

Help! My Kids are Overweight!

If you have recently found yourself fretting over your child?s waistline, you are not alone. The youth of today are fatter than ever before, and parents are starting to panic. Why are our kids so big, and what should we do about it?

Childhood obesity has been described as an epidemic. It puts our children?s health at risk, making them more susceptible to problems involving their cardiovascular systems, endocrine systems, and even their mental health. Type 2 diabetes mellitus, depression, and low self-esteem are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the problems looming over the heads of our overweight children.

It is ironic that both the problem and the solution to this heavy problem boil down to one simple equation. Energy In vs. Energy Out. When more energy is consumed than is utilized, the result is fat storage. In short, our kids eat too much and do too little.

Energy In

The Problem: Parents today are busier than ever before, navigating through hectic schedules with convenient fast food restaurants lurking on every corner. Our kids are eating more fried, processed, and sugary foods than we did as children due mainly to the convenience factor. These foods are laden with excessive calories that result in weight gain.

The Solution: Take time to evaluate your children?s diet. Do they eat three balanced meals a day? Do they eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day? Are they limited in their servings of fried, processed, and sugary foods? Avoid buying sugar-filled snacks while grocery shopping, fill your cart with fresh, healthy snacks instead. Make time to plan family meals so that you don?t find yourself in another drive thru.

Energy Out

The Problem: Computers, video games, and satellite T.V. are our children?s latest and greatest toys. Who has time to play outside when you are about to beat the hardest level, or your favorite show is about to start? Our kids participate in less physical activity and are more sedentary than any generation before.

The Solution: Limit the time your children spend on sedentary activities, such as T.V and video games. Sign your kids up on a local sports team so that they can run and be active with other kids. Take the whole family to the park on a weekend instead of gathering in front of the T.V.

As a parent, it is your unique responsibility to teach your children the healthy habits that lead to good health. Children who are obese have a greater chance of remaining obese into adulthood, thus greatly increasing the likelihood of serious health problems. Talk to your children about their eating habits, and activity levels, informing them of good choices versus bad choices. Make it a family effort to start eating healthier and increase physical activities, and you will be pleasantly surprised with the results!

The Power of Stretching

Your muscles ache from a good stretch. This is quite normal and is part of the process. Stretching has seemingly been with us and particular with athletes since the beginning of time.

A very key point to good stretching is to hold the stretch for at least seventeen seconds. This is a pearl of wisdom gleaned from a ballet teacher a few years back. She said that any stretch under 17 seconds was just not effective.

The 17 second rule is exceeded in the high intensity Bikram's yoga where stretches are held for about 30 seconds. Don't forget the high level of heat that is used in Bikram's to extract that last little bit of stretch out of your muscles. An interesting twist that is not necessary to gain benefits from stretching. But, it can't hurt, right?

So what kind of benefits can you expect from stretching? That's an easy one. Have you ever seen the movie, Blood Sport? Did you know that Frank Dux could truly stretch his body to the extreme. The actor that played him was quite elastic as well.

Great elasticity is also something you might see in well trained Spetsnaz(Russian)agents. They often work out with Russian kettlebells too. They are for superior strength gains and the ability to withstand ballistic shocks.

Why are stretching and flexibility considered important to these people? Stretching gives one the ability to have explosive power available at one's fingertips without the need to warm up. Of course most of us are not martial artists or agents. But, you'll be happy to know there are plenty of other benefits.

Let me give you an example. After learning to sit in the full lotus position for long periods of time, my ankles became very flexible. One day I was walking along and my left foot fell into a pothole. This mishap pushed my ankle sideways to about 90 degrees from it's normal position.

Amazingly, this didn't even hurt, not one bit. If my ankle hadn't been so flexible, I may have suffered a sprained ankle. At the very least, it would have hurt for days.

Key point: stretching helps us to avoid injuries. Not only that but if you do have a muscle, tendon or ligament injury it should heal faster, theoretically speaking.

Stretching actually grows the ligaments, tendons and muscles being stretched. They really grow longer over time.

Check with your physician before undertaking any type of exercise, including stretching.

Mandarin Pure Essential Oil

Although the mandarin tree is most commonly found in southern Europe, South America, and Japan, the mandarin tree originated in China. It was named for the Mandarins: the high officials of the former Chinese Empire.

The mandarin tree is a member of the orange family. The pure essential oil comes from the outer peel of the mandarin. The mandarin peel is pressed, and from it comes the flowery, sweet aroma scent associated with the oil. This oil is believed to improve mood and relieve anxiety. The oil is really a happy oil, as the smell of the oil gives you the feeling of cleanliness. It is safe for all ages, and children especially enjoy the aroma of the oil.

Therapeutic Effects of Mandarin Pure Essential Oil

There are many ways mandarin oil can uplift your spirits. Its tart, fresh aroma makes the oil useful for combating depression and sadness. It's properties enable it to ease distress, and it can even act as a gentle sedative.

What can pure essential oil of Mandarin do for me? There are many symptoms and problems mandarin pure essential oil can help with. The list can be somewhat overwhelming, but we will cover some of the most common ailments the oil is used for. For starters, it can be used as a natural cleaner around the house. Just add a few drops of oil to some water, dampen a rag, and clean away. The natural antiseptic properties of the mandarin oil will help clean and disinfect the items or rooms you are cleaning. This is especially good for the children's room, where you would not want the processed chemicals is some of the cleaners in the air, or on the surfaces the children are touching.

Second, it helps to prevent stretch marks. Mix mandarin oil with a carrier oil, such as safflower, sweet almond, or grape seed extract, and rub on your stomach every day while pregnant. The mixture should be ? cup of carrier oil, and 50 drops of mandarin pure essential oil. This oil is safe for pregnant women, so no need to worry. It only prevents, not removes. Sorry!

Third, it can also help relieve muscle cramps or tired muscles. Just mix 10 drops of Mandarin Oil and 5 drops of Geranium Oil in 1 cup of milk, and then add to the bath water. You cannot just add oils to water for obvious reasons. They do not mix. You need some sort of carrier, to absorb the oil, then to mix with the water. This is where the milk comes in.

As I said earlier, there are many other ailments, but the list is too long to cover. The main ingredient of the oil is the aroma. This is why it is called the happy oil. Just the fresh smell of oranges is enough to relax you and relieve your anxiety.

Safety information

One of the safest oils to use with everyone. Safe to use during pregnancy. Just make sure to take care. Mandarin oil is slightly yellow and will leave a residue in the diffuser lamp. You must also ensure to avoid direct sunlight if the oil has been applied to your shin. The oil is photosensitive, and will leave brown spots on your skin. The spots will go away with time, but it's just better to not have them.

Can Vitamin E Cure Almost Everything?

Vitamin E is an absolutely vital nutrient in your body, but it probably can't do half the things you heard it can.

What does vitamin E do? To begin, it is an antioxidant. It tames dangerous free radicals and helps prevent blood clots and blockages in coronary arteries. Research points to its ability to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart attacks and some cancers.

Vitamin E is also believed to slow the aging process and to help nerve conduction. Most importantly, it works to enhance and even protect vitamin C and Vitamin A.

There is also promising research that vitamin E might help prevent or slow the onset of cataracts in the eyes.

Vitamin E has been touted as a cure for just about everything but a broken heart. I am sure that's coming, though. Here are just a few of the diseases and conditions vitamin E has been credited with curing or preventing:

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Infertility in both men and women

  • Alzheimer's disease

  • Hepatitis

  • eye tissue inflammation

  • fibromylagia

  • hair loss

  • PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome)

  • heavy menstruation

  • healing wounds

  • diabetes

  • atherosclerosis

  • menopause

  • osteoarthritis

  • even restless leg syndrome!

It might well prove that vitamin is helpful in some of these and other conditions, but probably not in many or even most of them.

As with many vitamins, there is a raging debate over how much vitamin E you need. The US recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 8-10 milligrams per day. But most people in the nutrition field believe that to capture the long-term benefits, people need 10 to 20 times that quantity, which is well short of the maximum recommended 1,000 milligrams.

Vitamin E is found in many foods in small quantities. The good news is that almost everyone gets sufficient vitamin E to avoid a deficiency, with a few exceptions noted below. The bad news is that most people do not get the RDA. This is definitely a vitamin that should be supplemented.

Be careful about what supplements you choose, since the synthetic version of vitamin E is not even half effective as in its natural form. Look for nutritional supplements containing natural vitamin E, preferably in liquid form.

People on low fat diets need supplements the most, since fats and oils are the largest sources of vitamin E. Nuts and green, leafy vegetables are also good sources, as are egg yolks and liver. So are whole grains.

Vitamin E probably will never cure your broken heart, nor live up to half of the claims people make about it. But it is an important vitamin for maintaining good health and it is needed in quantities above what most people take in their diet.

Understanding Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric conditions affecting people today. Both children and adults today are susceptible to these conditions. In the US, approximately 19 million adults suffer from some type of anxiety disorder. These conditions affect people?s lives on a daily basis, restricting their ability to work, relax, eat, and even sleep. Anxiety disorders are chronic, relentless, and they can grow progressively worse if not treated. Here?s a closer look at some common anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobias, post traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Also called GAD, this is a common anxiety disorder characterized by chronic episodes of ?free floating anxiety or apprehension that are not linked to a specific cause or situation. These episodes of GAD may last for six months or more. Stressful life events, such as moving, changing jobs, losing a loved one, or suffering a financial hardship can trigger or contribute to the anxiety. Muscle tension, sweating, difficulty swallowing, edginess, nausea, trembling, insomnia, abdominal upsets, dizziness, and irritability are the common physical symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. Women are twice as likely as men to be affected by this condition.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: OCD is commonly joked about in movies and television programs. Jack Nicholson's character in As Good as It Gets suffered from obsessive compulsive anxiety disorder. However, sufferers of the condition, and their loved ones, don't find it to be a joking matter. With this condition, individuals are plagued by constant thoughts or obsessions that create fear and anxiety. For instance, a sufferer of obsessive-compulsive disorder might constantly fear being contaminated by germs or burning down the house. These obsessions compel the person to compulsively complete a routine or series of routines (such as washing hands or checking the toaster) to relieve the anxiety. Over one third of individuals who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder began to demonstrate signs of the disease in childhood.

Panic Disorder: A panic disorder is characterized by intense attacks that cause the sufferer to experience such symptoms as heart palpitations, chest pain or discomfort, sweating, trembling, tingling sensations, feeling of choking, fear of dying, fear of losing control, and loss of touch with reality. People with panic disorder have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. They can't predict when an attack will occur, and many develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike. These attacks may be triggered by a stressful event or they may come on for no discernible reason. People who suffer from panic attacks are often uncomfortable in new or unfamiliar environments since they may be unsure of how they will get themselves to safety if an attack should occur. For this reason, panic disorders often occur with agoraphobia, in which people are afraid of any strange places. Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from a panic disorder.

Phobias: Many people experience a healthy amount of fear or apprehension when faced with scary objects like spiders or situations such as looking over the edge of a cliff. But people who are intensely afraid of a specific object or situation may be suffering from an anxiety disorder known as a phobia. A phobic person displays a level of fear that is irrational and disproportionate to the situation. Specific phobias often lead sufferers to avoid normal, everyday situations. Over 14 million adult Americans are affected by one type of phobia or another. Some of the more common specific phobias are centered around closed-in places, heights, escalators, tunnels, highway driving, water, flying, dogs, and injuries involving blood.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD, is a debilitating anxiety disorder that is typically triggered by witnessing or taking part in a major traumatic event. Childhood abuse, rape, war, a terrorist act, death of a loved one, a natural disaster, or a catastrophic accident are all frequent causes of post traumatic stress disorder. Regardless of the cause, the development of post traumatic stress disorder often leads to intense feelings of fear, helplessness, or horror. After the traumatic event, many people experience nightmares, daytime flashbacks of the event, difficulty sleeping, numbness of emotions, or sometimes even personality changes. For many people, these symptoms stop within a month. However, for many others, the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder may continue for months or even years.

Social Anxiety Disorder: Social anxiety disorder affects men as frequently as it affects women. People who suffer from this condition tend to feel extreme anxiety about their behavior or their perceived behavior in a public setting. They may be terrified of being judged or ridiculed or causing themselves embarrassment. Physical symptoms associated with this social anxiety disorder include heart palpitations, faintness, blushing and profuse sweating. These symptoms often lead the sufferer to avoid social situations.

Baldness and Hair Loss: Natural Remedies

Most of us would privately agree that hair loss affects our psyche and self esteem intensely. The hair we have on our scalp - our crowning glory - is one of the most important features of our appearance and affects our overall ?attractiveness quotient?. It is absolutely devastating to our ego and self-worth when hair loss results in thinning or partial or total baldness.

Hair loss can become an obsession with anyone who suffers from the condition. These patterns have been identified on the The ?Norwood scale? which classifies different types of hair loss. A research study recently found that most people showed extreme loss of self-esteem, ranging from vulnerability to jealousy.

A number of factors could lead to hair loss.

Diet: Eat right. A healthy diet can only improve your overall health. Include plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and small amounts of lean protein. A paramount cause of hair loss for women is hypochlorhydria. So, ask your doctor to test you for inadequate protein digestion brought on by low stomach acid.

Lack of Vitamins: Excessive hair loss can also be caused by deficiencies in folic acid and vitamin B12.

Iron Deficiency: Another common, but generally unrecognized, cause of hair loss is an iron deficiency, especially in pre-menopausal women. Dr. Wright, who publishes an excellent ezine, stresses that you can increase iron intake by adding dried fruits, fish, legumes, meat, molasses, potatoes, dark green leafy vegetables, wheat germ, and whole-grain products to your diet. (Unfortunately, iron does not help with male pattern baldness.)

DHEA: Many women past 50 find that when they raise their levels of DHEA back up to the range for a normal 30- or 40-year-old woman, it not only slows or stops hair loss, but it can actually help re-grow new hair. Noticeable diffuse thinning in women usually starts after menopause, when the production of the female hormone, estrogen, slows down dramatically or stops altogether.

Sunlight: Get out of the house! Sunlight provides you with vitamin D which the body greatly needs. So spend some time outdoors and reap the benefits of fresh air and sunshine. Your beautiful hair will soon mirror your health.

Dandruff: Among the more common factors concerning hairloss, there is the dreaded subject of dandruff. If you have an oily scalp, which is the real culprit behind most dandruff (not a dry scalp), a daily shampoo will help prevent dandruff. It should be a gentle, preferably herbal, shampoo. No strong chemicals.

Stress: Stress aggravates dandruff. It can either trigger it or exacerbate an already bad condition. A 5 minute daily meditation will do wonders for your overall health and hair.

Asian Formula for beautiful hair: Here is a routine used by many Indian women for glossy healthy hair. Mix 25% castor oil with 75% almond oil and gently massage for 10 minutes into your scalp weekly. It should first be warmed (place the container in hot water for 5 minutes), so that it is readily absorbed into the scalp. Leave on your scalp for 15 minutes to 30 minutes before shampooing out with a gentle natural shampoo. Follow with a final rinse with a vinegar and warm water solution (5% vinegar, 95% water), and then seal the hair, and remove the vinegar odour, with a cold rinse. Towel dry. Look in the mirror. You will love your beautiful shiny manageable hair.

Remember, natural remedies are always better than harsh chemicals, especially for your hair!

Are You a Suitable Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery, derived from the Greek word baros meaning weight, is designed to reduce obesity indirectly by restricting the amount of food calories a person can digest. Some bariatric operations (eg. lap band) achieve this by reducing the size of the stomach size. Other operations (eg. roux-en-Y gastric bypass) go one step further. As well as reducing stomach volume, they also reduce the length of the small intestine. This constitutes a more permanent alteration of the digestive tract and makes it more difficult for the patient to cheat.

How To Qualify For Bariatric Surgery?

According to the National Institutes of Health Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults, you may be a candidate for obesity surgery only if: (1) you have a body mass index (BMI) of 40+ (about 100 pounds overweight), or (2) your BMI is 35+ and you suffer from severe weight-related health problems such as hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease or severe sleep apnea.

Are You a Suitable Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

Meeting the above criteria does not guarantee your eligibility for weight loss surgery. Most bariatric clinics operate a screening policy and only approve candidates who are (a) ready to make appropriate long-term behavioral changes; and (b) committed to long-term (even lifelong) medical follow-up. This is because weight loss surgery can only be successful if you are willing to change your existing eating and exercise habits, on a permanent basis.

What Are The Main Types of Bariatric Operation?

There are two main types of obesity surgery: gastric banding and gastric bypass. These operations may be performed using traditional open surgical techniques, or minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques using instruments connected to video monitors, which allow the surgeon to see inside the patient without having to make large incisions. Patients who undergo laparascopic surgery suffer fewer perioperative and post-operative health complications, and typically remain in hospital for 2-3 days, compared to 4-5 days for open surgery. They return to work within 2-3 weeks, compared to 4-6 weeks for traditional surgeries.

Gastric banding is sometimes referred to as restrictive surgery. This is because it works by restricting calorie intake only. During a gastric banding operation, the surgeon shrinks the stomach from melon to egg size using special staples, or a silicone band. These procedures are more easily reversible as they do not fundamentally alter the anatomy of the digestive system. The drawback is, patients find it easier to cheat. Thus stomach banding is not as effective for weight reduction as stomach bypass. Examples of gastric banding procedures include: adjustable gastric banding such as lap band, and vertical banded gastroplasty.

Gastric bypass, sometimes called malabsorptive surgery since it restricts the absorption of calories and nutrition, is a two stage process. First, the surgeon reduces the size of the stomach. Second, the first part of the small intestine (duodenum and jejunum) is bypassed. This causes food to pass much more rapidly through the digestive tract and significantly reduces the amount of nutrients and calories that can be absorbed. So even if patients overeat, they will absorb less. As a result, weight loss after gastric bypass is typically greater than after gastric banding. Examples of stomach bypass procedures include: roux-en-Y, biliopancreatic diversion, and duodenal switch.

What Can You Eat After Bariatric Surgery?

As a bariatric patient, you must expect a drastic change of eating habits following your operation. In general, due to the small size of your new stomach pouch, you will feel full after only a very small amount of food. Over-eating or eating too fast can cause extremely unpleasant nausea, referred to as dumping syndrome. The typical post-operative diet regimen comprises four stages. Immediately after surgery, you may ingest clear liquids only. After 2-3 days this broadens to include any liquids. After about 2 weeks semi-solids may be consumed, leading to a low-fat solid diet after 5-6 weeks. Progress depends upon the individual circumstances of each patient.

What About The Problem of Loose Skin?

During the 12-24 months following a successful bariatric bypass or banding operation, you may lose as much as 50-80 percent of your pre-operative excess weight. As a result, you may develop a significant amount of loose skin. In addition, as your weight loss may not occur evenly throughout your body, you may suffer from unsightly pockets of excess fat. Generally speaking the only solution for these problems is plastic surgery. Common procedures include: tummy tuck, thigh-lift, panniculectomy, breast-lift, male breast reduction, arm-lift and neck lift. Liposuction is not generally considered to be a weight-related procedure as it only removes fat. It does not excise loose skin or tighten loose muscles. One point to note, is that, unlike bariatric surgery, this type of plastic surgery is not covered by medical insurance as it is deemed to be a cosmetic procedure.

What is The Cost of Bariatric Surgery?

The costs of bariatric surgeries vary according to the surgeon, the type of procedure performed, and the range of support services offered. Basic prices range from $25,000 to $35,000.

Is Bariatric Surgery Covered By Insurance?

Medical insurance coverage varies by state and insurance provider. Several states have passed legislation requiring insurers to offer weight loss surgery for patients, providing it meets health criteria laid down by the National Institutes of Health. However, getting insurance approval by yourself can be a time-consuming process. Ideally, work with your surgeon/doctor and get him/her to explain to your health insurance provider that the proposed surgery is not a cosmetic procedure but an operation which will help you minimize major health problems later in life. Once your insurance company understands that the surgical operation is a money-saving procedure, they often agree to provide cover. Some bariatric clinics claim an 80 percent success-rate for obtaining insurer-approval in this way.

Family & Friends Walk to Honor a Young Woman's Fight Against Cancer

When her children's babysitter was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in January of this year, Shannon Draisey knew she had to help. Since Cheryl enjoyed walking, a walk-a-thon was a fitting event and so one was planned to raise money for her cancer treatment.

Unfortunately Cheryl's condition worsened rather quickly and she passed away on March 11th. However plans continued for the walk in her honor and the name was changed to the 1st Annual Memory March for Markley 2 Mile Run/Walk.

Everyone was welcome to come help celebrate Cheryl's life, support her family and raise awareness about lung cancer. Besides walkers there were also runners, moms with strollers, kids on bikes and grandparents who participated.

Shannon said, I used the information from Step by Step Fundraising to assist me in sending out letters to business/organizations asking for their support as a sponsor, in newspaper ads and in the sponsor kit the I created for my walk.

The walk was April 30, 2005 at a local park. Each participant received a t-shirt with the event date and a picture of Cheryl. Especially since many of the participants were friends or family, the t-shirts were greatly appreciated. Over 100 people attended the walk, and after expenses the event raised $3600 for the family.

There was a special kickoff ceremony with a prayer and balloon release. The balloons were in lavender, which is the general cancer awareness color and ivory/clear, the lung cancer awareness color.

Since the walk was to benefit an individual and not a registered non profit organization, donors were not allowed to consider contributions as tax deductible. However, Shannon didn't find this to be too much of a problem and had many people including businesses donate money, goods and services.

Shannon sent out approximately 200 letters to local business and organizations which resulted in 28 sponsors. Some of them were monetary and some contributed water, the sign for the walk, a gator to get around the park in, and other supplies.

I would have to say personal friends of Cheryl made the walk a success. With over 100 people that showed up, all of them knew Cheryl and wanted to help. But by putting an ad in our local newspaper weekly for a month prior to the walk helped to generate some additional walkers.

When asked what advice she would give to other walk organizers, Shannon replied, If you want to organize a run/walk make sure you get in touch with someone who has organized one in the past. They have valuable information, tips and do's and dont's that will help make your walk a success.

While this year's walk was for the family of one person effected by cancer, next year's walk will be expanded to focus on raising awareness about lung cancer prevention. Shannon would like to help educate the public about the dangers of radon levels in basements, which Cheryl's doctors believe was the reason that she developed lung cancer.

Next year's walk will benefit radon research or lung cancer research. Shannon is also considering donating a portion of the proceeds to the local cancer coalition and starting a scholarship or humanitarian award in Cheryl's name.

Sandra Sims, ?The Fundraising Coach has been raising money through charity walks and special events for 10 years. She shares her fundraising tips for all types of non profit organizations on her website StepByStepFundraising.com where you can find out more about charity walk events and other fun fundraisers.

Learn About Food Nutrition Facts

Food nutrition facts

Finding food nutrition facts and dietary nutrition used to be almost impossible because of the mountains of facts scattered all about in libraries and books. Lets face it most of us aren't going to cuddle up to a book on vitamins and minerals. Fortunately with the growth and popularity of the internet and the computer the fact finding process has been much simplified. Finding good food nutrition facts can now be done with the click of the mouse.

Learning about our foods and diets can be very enlightening. Things we were taught as children may in fact of reality be much different than what we were taught. Doing what we were taught years ago may today be very much out of synch with what we really should be doing.

It's sort of like the ole 'wives tales theory. Complicating our lives further we have the great American fast food era that has practically crippled any sensibility to proper food intake.

Why should we learn more, it's pretty simple to just drive thru pick up those goodies and off we go. Most of us are exhausted at the end of the day looking for relief not more work. With perhaps a little awareness of our food situation today, perhaps not as much effort needs to be mustered up to make an impact on ourselves and family today.

And, what's wrong in getting the crew involved with some self education as a family type project. After all it's the family that presses it demands on you ? so why not let them help and take a little responsibility?

Finding the facts about fast food restaurant nutrition is pretty easy as well. Along with specific foods like Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Indian and other types of foods is readily available. We've even seen charts of nothing but fish food nutrition. Gather up this information print it out and let others study the issue and provide a family report at dinner.

Let everyone get involved and then work together making changes that all have come to learn about and now better understand why. Have someone do a report on food label nutrition facts as well. There's a saying I remember that goes along these lines. A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. With some education, patience (what's new) and the gathering of food nutrition facts we start on our new journey for optimum health.

Are You A Sugarolic?

A sugarolic is just as addicted as an alcoholic. You need the stimulation, your drug is the sugar instead of alcohol or cocaine. When you eat sugar you give your brain extra Serotonin, a hormone in your brain which makes you feel good. When the effect of the sugar is gone you feel worse and you eat more sugar. It`s like a roller coaster, you get high on sugar, down without.

Here are some of the symptoms:

* Sleep deprive
* Mood swings
* Lack of energy
* Pain
* Temperature swings in your body
* Weight gain
* Exhaustion
* Migraine
* Depression
* Trembling

The sugar level in a can of coke or similar is equivalent to 10-12 teaspoons sugar, in just one can! We need approximately 3-4 teaspoons sugar every day.

To make changes and take back your healthy life, you should eat meat, fish, cheese, eggs, beans, vegetables. You should be careful with fruit, since fruit contains sugar. If you are careful with sugar, you can eat a couple of fruits daily. Beware the sugar added in ready made food. Take time to read the ingredient in the food you buy, you will be amazed how much sugar added.

If you`re a sugarolic you need 2-3 weeks to detox your body from sugar. If you stay away from sugar completely in this period, you will experience to get your energy back, your headaches will disappear (may increase the first weeks)and you will lose weight.

Also beware sugar free products, artificial sugar has the same effect as sugar, sometimes even more addictive.

Drink a lot of water while you detox.

Childhood Obesity Statistics and Diabetes

The picture of health presented by current childhood obesity statistics is not a rosy one. The percentage of obese or overweight children in the United States has roughly doubled between 1971 and 2000.

Obesity has become widespread among both adults and children in the United States. The prevalence of overweight and obese children has increased from 15% in 1971 to more than 30% in 2000.

Does obesity follow ethnicity?

There are large disparities in the childhood overweight situation in the Los Angeles County in California. One report published in January, 2006, shows children of Latin American decent leading the Overweight competition in that western US state.

It shows the childhood obesity problem divided among ethnic groups like this:

  • 19.4% ... African Americans (or Blacks)
  • 17.6% ... American Indians
  • 11.9% ... Asians
  • 25.2% ... Latinos
  • 20.0% ... Pacific Islanders
  • 13.0% ... whites
One can surmise that this may be typical of the general US population. I suppose that any variation in this distribution may simply follow the demographic make-up of respective localities.

But I remember reading an article where the writer was ranting about how Caucasians and Latin Americans viewed the definition of overweight or being fat differently.

According to article, the meaning of overweight differs from one culture to the other. Apparently, Whites like to be movie-star-thin but Latinos like the curves. In other words, thin looks sick to Latinos and curves look fat to whites.

What childhood obesity statistics predict about diabetes

Whatever the view one takes regarding having bodily curves or being bodily thin, the real issue is health. How do the curves or the thins relate to lifestyle conditions like diabetes and hypertension?

One of the startling realities I came across as I looked at some childhood obesity statistics was this sentence from a research articls: Sports participation among children is declining.

  • Children who are not thin and have lots of curves, in other words, who are considered obese or overweight **and** are are not physically active, have significant odds of being type 2 diabetics before they even become adults.
  • Children who are thin, i.e. are not considered obese or overweight, **but** who are not physically active, can become overweight and have the same fate as those who are already overweight or obese.
  • Children especially need proper diet and physical exercise

With these areas of our lives being neglected everyday, we can expect the childhood obesity statistics to continue to point towards a grim future for the health and wellness of future generations.

Physical activity among children should not be allowed to wane. As Broderick, Winter, and Allan (2006) remarked, Sport and physical activity are important in childhood for optimising bone mass and reducing obesity and insulin resistance.

Coupling the lack of physical activity with the prevalence of junk food, excess sugar and fats in the diet, one can expect this trend to produce a larget segment of the world population having type 2 diabetes.

    End the Lies

How far will he lies spread? On national news this morning there was a story about bacteria in the workplace. It was about how dangerous it is to interact with other people. The news story went so far as to say that it is dangerous to shake hands with other people, or use equipment that they may touch, or drink from the same water cooler.

    When will this insanity end?

First I want you to notice the source of the study that named all the places with the most bacteria. It was a researcher paid by Clorox. Also understand that the news item was basically a disguised commercial for Clorox antibacterial wipes. Also notice that he would not say that the bacteria on these items caused disease. They said they could cause disease.

There is an important point there. The bacterial cause of disease has never been proven. It is only a THEORY. It is not a fact. The fact is that they have only been able to prove the opposite. Bacteria can complicate disease, but they don't cause disease. If bacteria get into a cut they can complicate the healing process and if they get into the blood they can cause problems. However touching bacteria will not cause disease.

Bacteria are our symbiotic partners in life. If you could destroy every bacteria there is on our planet, in an effort to stop disease, we would all die. We need bacteria on our bodies and in our digestive system. They aid in digestion. In our small intestines they create vitamin B12. They break down dead cell tissues.

Satan, the god of this world, would have us live in fear of what God has created for our good. Billions are spent eadch year, on the war on bacteria. Cleanliness is good to a point. However it has been proven that too much cleanliness is hazardous to our health. The chemicals used to fight bacteria are deadly to humans.

If you are made overly sensitive by eating a diet too high in protein these chemicals can contribute to cancer. This fact is overlooked because of the remote chance that bacteria might cause you to get sick, and the perceived risk of bacteria causing disease.

Don't be blinded to the truth. End the power of Satan to empty your wallet, and destroy your health, in a fight to eliminate bacteria. It has been proven that the common cold is a body instituted cleansing process. When we have too much toxic waste in our bodies, any stress can trigger the body's efforts to step up elimination of the toxins. The body is always in control of the symptoms associated with the common cold. When you fight the common cold you are fighting your own body, not bacteria.

Yes bacteria multiply in these situations. Bacteria are scavengers. They eat dead cell debris. Like earthworms are good for plants, bacteria are good for us. For instance take a look at the streptococcus bacteria. They are always present in our bodies. If our bodies start dumping toxins, through our mucus membranes, bacteria multiply. The food has to come first. If there is no food supply they do not multiply.

Experiments have been done in an attempt to cause the common cold or the flu or any other disease by deliberately introducing the bacteria once thought to cause the cold to healthy people.

Other studies have shown that the bacteria thought to cause the common cold are not always present during the cold. In fact a high percentage of people with a cold have none of the suspect bacteria. Even realitively large quantities of the bacteria did not cause the cold.

The perpetuation of this lie soothes the beast within. Human nature is to blame anything rather than accept responsibility for our own actions. We eat things that are outside of our design because someone says we should, or because we like it, or we just want to have it your way. We cause our own health problems through ignorance, or by choice, and wonder why? It is so easy to blame the lowly bacteria.

We seek out those who will say anything for a buck, who will back up our choice to blame something outside of ourselves. We then get what we asked for, an innocent suspect, to use as a scapegoat.

It is much like sin. We have a tendency to blame anyone but ourselves when we do wrong. On the news this morning a man who murdered a young girl, blamed the drugs he took, and his emotional state, for his actions. He was begging for his life.

To end the Lies, we must take responsibility for what we do. Seek the truth about health, and the truth about health, will set you free from disease, and pain.

Vitamins: How To Keep Your Body Healthy By Using Vitamins Safely

Vitamins are an important part of a health diet. Unlike carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, vitamins do not directly provide building blocks or energy for your body; vitamins function as assistants to your body in creating and breakdown down building blocks and storing and releasing energy.

Vitamins come in two basic types: water-soluble and fat-soluble (see the table on the website below)

Quick-Guide to Vitamins by Shoppe.MD Online Pharmacy

If your diet generally follows the USDA Food Guide Pyramid, you will get the recommended daily allowances of vitamins (the amount people generally need). But there are many reasons why these guidelines might not get us the vitamins we need.

    * Day-to-day living: In the rush of daily life, it may be hard to eat a consistently balanced diet. Sometimes we skip meals or buy them from sources (like fast-food restaurants) where we do not have easy access to information about nutritional value.

    * Pregnancy: If you are pregnant (or breastfeeding), you may need to significantly change your vitamin intake. Folic acid is crucial to the brain and nervous system development of, but at the same time an excess of other vitamins (including vitamin A) can cause serious fetal injury.

    * Seniority: Seniors often have difficulties eating or digesting certain foods, including those that can provide vitamins

    * Diets: Being on low-calorie diets or diets that restrict certain types of food can significantly impact getting enough of all kinds of vitamins.

So for many of us, vitamin supplements will be helpful in getting and staying healthy. But like anything else we do for our health, it?s as important to know the risks as the benefits.

    * The ?Too Much of a Good Thing? Trap: Vitamins in the proper doses are good for you. But many vitamins are toxic in large quantities, so taking more than enough may be a bad idea. Excess vitamin A can lead to nausea, vomiting, and peeling skin, and over the long-term can lead to significant damage to bones, brain and nerves. It can also be very dangerous for a developing fetus. Vitamin E can cause a rise in LDL (?bad?) cholesterol, and like all fat-soluble vitamins, is stored in the liver, so if you take a little bit extra every day, the impact can show up over time. Even vitamin D, the bone-building vitamin, can actually encourage bone loss if taken in excess.

    * Vitamins are not food: Vitamins are sometimes called ?micronutrients.? Small doses can keep us healthy. However, they are not a substitute for the food that your body needs to make energy and rebuild damaged tissue. Diets that severely restrict or eliminate proteins, fats, or carbohydrates can impair functioning, and vitamins cannot make up for that.

    * Fetuses and children are not grown-ups: Children have special vitamins for a reason - their bodies need different things than adults do. Treat children?s supplements like any other medication; they may taste like candy, but letting your child take more than the recommended dose can have significant consequences. To keep a fetus growing steadily and correctly, a vitamin discussion should be part of your regular prenatal care.

For Effective Weight Loss Curb Hunger And Avoid The Binge

Curb Hunger and Avoid The Costly Binge

Everyone's been there - you miss a meal or you are getting used to a lower calorie phase of your nutrition plan when the munchies hit. You grab the nearest and quickest food available - usually a high carb snack food - and you chow down. And to add insult to injury you find yourself hungry again just as quickly as someone who didn't snack!

The best thing you can do to avoid this is to plan ahead and always have a meal ready to go quickly. Sure, this can't always be done but it's your best bet to avoiding binges.

When hunger pangs hit - DO SOMETHING! And I don't mean eat. Drink water, go for a walk, etc. You'll find that the hunger pangs subside in about 10 minutes or so - unless you've missed a meal and are really hungry.

If you must snack, make sure to always have high protein food available. You'll stay fuller longer as it takes your body more time to digest protein.

Try to keep some of these things handy -

Cooked kitchen strips - one cup has 38 grams of protein and only 180 calories

Lowfat cottage cheese - one cup has 28 grams of protein and 168 calories

A three ounce can of white-meat chicken has 14 grams of protein and 70 calories

Two sticks of string cheese has 14 grams of protein and 160 calories

A full can of tuna packed in spring water - 37 grams of protein and 175 calories

Reach for the nuts. Keeping nuts around will keep you from binging on high carbohydrate junk food because they are just as convenient for when you have to eat something now!

Nuts supply you with good fats that can lower your cholesterol as well as fiber and important vitamins and minerals. Make sure to select dry roasted and unsalted. And don't forget, even though it's high in good fats, that still translates to 9 calories per gram. Don't every eat.

    Fats and the Brain

It is said that the brain is 40-60 % fat. So when we take fats out of our diet, our brain along with other parts of our body suffers. What we need to do is change the bad fats that we eat to good fats. Good fats nourish our body and keep us young and healthy. Good fats consist of: flax oil, extra virgin olive oil, salmon oil, fish oils, primrose oil, hemp oil and their combinations. Also eating raw nuts, seeds and avocadoes will provide good fats in the diet; the body cannot make them, they must be consumed.

Firstly, the good fats (efa?s) are a part of the structure of the cell membrane. They help form the barrier against viruses, bacteria and other foreign substances. This barrier also keeps important items in the cell, such as: genetic materials, proteins, enzymes and the cell organelles. What goes in and what goes out of each cell is also regulated by the cell membrane. It is said the health of the body is dependant on the health of its cells.

These efa?s are also precursors of things like DHA, which is needed by the brain, as well as the adrenals and eyes. These good fats are used for energy production, oxygen use and electron transport, all of these of course are important to healthy brain function. Basically, without proper fats in the diet, our brain will suffer.

Mental health is so important. Without good fats in the diet, the prostaglandins that regulate the neurotransmitters (the chemicals that transmit information from nerve cell to nerve cell) cannot be made. Mental illness can set in, conditions such as: Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Senility and other undiagnosed conditions, irritability, PMS, anger, etc. Essential Fatty Acids have a calming affect on the nerves and the body; hyperactive children are usually benefited by efa?s. Depression and aging are also helped by efa supplementation.

To get more good fats in your diet, eat fish, raw nuts, seeds, avocadoes, green leafy vegetables and cold pressed oils: flax, hemp and their combinations. Never cook with these good fats, frying should be done with butter or coconut oil.

Remember its not how much fat you consume, it?s the type of that counts.

Lose the Weight the Healthy Way

High-protein diets may not be as bad as they say after all especially if you like to work out and add fiber and complex carbohydrates to the diet.

Research at the University of Illinois has shown that a diet rich in lean meat and dairy products can make regular exercise even more effective for losing body fat. I emphasize Lean Meat or Low Fat Protein Supplements such as whey or egg whites.

A study found that women who exercised at least 200 minutes per week lost about the same amount of weight whether they ate a high-protein or a high-carbohydrate diet, but the most important finding in this study was almost all the weight lost by those who ate the protein-rich diet was body fat, while almost one-third of the weight lost by those on the high-carbohydrate diet was muscle.

Losing the muscle reduces your calorie burn thus reducing your body's ability to burn calories. This is an extremely important finding as by losing the fat and retaining the muscle our body begins to burn more and more calories, thus accelerating the fat loss.

It is a proven fact protein really does help weight loss, but we as Americans already eat more protein than they need, but at the same time consume too many simple carbohydrates, sugars, saturated fats and trans fats.

Studies have also found that diets containing fruits and vegetables contain a lot of fiber and vitamin-rich carbohydrates The major role plant foods, like vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans play in weight loss is adding fiber and complex carbohydrates to our diet. As we have discovered to maximize the bodies ability to burn fat we need to consume enough protein to sustain muscle tissue. Whole fruits, vegetables, fiber and complex carbohydrates that can cleanse the blood of artery-clogging cholesterol thus helping pull fat from the body. This gives you the double benefit of reducing fat in the blood and muscle to burn stored body fat.

So remember -- successful dieting does not mean not eating. It means eating right, and eating regularly. A lean body and genuine health can be yours -- safely and naturally.

    Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to treat patients who are in pain or who are having problems within their minds. Those who use hypnotherapy believe that patients who enter a trance are much more likely to listen to suggestions which are given to them. Some conditions which are treated by hypnotherapy are pain, stress, obesity, stress, and amnesia. While many of these conditions are related to the mind, some functional ailments can be treated as well. Hypnotherapy is a practice that was used by the Ancient Egyptians and Indians. In these societies the practice would often have a religious tone, and both music and dance was included in the practice.

It wasn't until the 19th century that a number of healers begin developing the methods that would come to be known as hypnosis. Franz Anton Mesmer developed a theory which has come to be known as animal magnetism. He did extensive research on hysteria, and his studies indicated that advanced cases were similar to what is called a post-traumatic stress disorder. The work of Sigmund Freud also played an important role in the development of hypnotherapy. There are a number of criticisms which have been made against the practice.

Some believe that the connection between the patient and the therapist may cause problems. The patient may want to please the therapist, or they may worry that the therapist doesn't like them. However, many of these claims are inconsistent because hypnotherapy will generally take place in a medical facility. There are a number of common techniques that are used in this practice. One of the primary techniques is age regression. The hypnotist will attempt to mentally return the patient to a previous state, and this will often be done to help the patient gain something that they have lost.

The second technique that is commonly used in hypnotherapy is called revivification. In this technique, the hypnotist will help the patient remember previous experiences they've had. As an example, the hypnotist may ask a patient if they have ever been fishing, and if they have been, they will begin recalling the time that they went fishing, and there will be no need for the hynotist to create a new state. Another common method that is used in hypnotherapy is called a guided imagery. With this technique, the hypnotist will guide the patient through a pleasant experience. The hypnotist may often repeat certain ideas or concepts in order to get the patient to accept them, and this is called repetition.

In general, people are more relaxed when they are in a dream state. When a person is able to visualize something they desire, research has shown that it is much more likely that they will obtain it. In this situation, the goal of the hypnotist is to help the patient achieve a desired goal. The word Hypnotherapy is based off the word Hypnos, and this was the name of the Greek god of sleep. This technique has primarily been used to help people on a mental level, and was not well understood until the 19th century.

Paruresis Fear of Using the Restroom in Public

Paruresis is a kind of social anxiety disorder that is found in the people of both sexes. Known by different names, such as pee shy, shy kidney or bashful bladder, this problem makes the sufferer uncomfortable to urinate in places like public restrooms. Paruresis is one step ahead of shyness, and it leads to physical consequences

It may not be a serious disorder unless the person is experiencing it from a long time. Such people hesitate traveling or undergoing long journeys. They may also face problems in urinating within the premises of their houses, if they doubt that someone can hear them urinate. Most likely, a person develops this syndrome during the teenage years, but there is no specified age limit for this.

Strategies Needed to be Followed By a Person Suffering From Paruresis

Drinking excess fluids makes you urinate more than often and therefore, increasing the chances of discomfort. Experts normally suggest fewer intakes of liquids and fluids. It is better to avail the opportunity to urinate whenever you are safe.

People suffering from Paruresis feel uncomfortable while urinating because they feel that their urinating sounds can be heard. The best option is to run the tap or flush so that the urinating sounds are lost in these sounds and are not audible. These are some strategies to be followed in the initial stages.

If the condition is too serious to be avoided, then there are different kinds of therapies including the cognitive therapy, training sessions with biofeedback, and anti-anxiety medications. You may also use a catheter to alleviate the systems and indulge in graduated exposure therapies. Indulging in group events and increased socializing in different kinds of workshops does help such cases.

Avoiding Anxiety to Get Rid of Paruresis

Muscular tension is the result of anxiety that makes relaxation difficult. Sphincter muscles are required to be relaxed while a person is urinating or is about to pee. If a person becomes self-conscious, the sphincter muscles are not able to relax creating the entire problem.

Psychotherapy and hypnosis are other techniques that have been tried and tested on people suffering with this syndrome. These therapies have led to efficient results. A common misconception is that only men suffer from paruresis, but girls and women of any age can become its victims too.

There is another fear that may be lurking in the minds of some sufferers. They presume that there might be someone waiting outside the door hearing or probably seeing them urinate. This is an imaginary situation usually, but the sufferer seldom realizes this fact. Public toilets in trains, boats, buses and planes are some of the common places where these symptoms are stronger in nature. An expert reported that a patient went out of control when he was asked to give a sample of urine for medical examination. It was later discovered that he reacted in that peculiar manner because of paruresis. Whatever be the reason, you can rest assured that Paruresis can be treated by both medications as well as behavioral therapies.

    Clairvoyant Child

Parents of children who are gifted with the ability to see events and things without the aid of the senses have varying reactions to this. It is simply because having a child who is different from the others can be a bigger responsibility; from time to time, you will have to explain to him why he has that ability and how he can make use of it.

A clairvoyant child is a very sensitive and energetic child. Although he may be extremely shy with people, unless he is with family or friends, he has that feeling of deserving to be in the world and may wonder why others do not have his gift. He often sees a better way of doing things and does not just settle for what the system requires him to do.

On the other hand, a clairvoyant child gets bored easily and requires emotional stability and security from the people around him. He can get easily frustrated when he can?t turn ideas into realization because of lack of assistance from other people. He also gives up easily and develops permanent learning blocks when he experiences failure.

With these negative and positive characteristics, it is important for the parents to treat their child with respect and honor his existence in the family. It is better to give him choices about everything rather than imposing a set of rules that he can find monotonous. And above all, as a parent, you should always be there to support your clairvoyant child in every endeavor that he takes.

It could be difficult to be a parent of a clairvoyant child if you are not able to understand and learn his attitude early on, even from infancy. Your child may be different from the others, but just like normal kids, he also needs nurturing, attention, love, and the care of a parent.

Acne Sufferers Look Fabulous This Holiday Season With Natural Mineral Makeup

The holidays are fast approaching, and for many acne sufferers they're dreaded because of the cofines of friends and family. With that many people close, it's hard to get excited when you know they'll get a close glimpse at your acne prone skin.

The natural inclination is to smear loads o concealer and foundation over blemishes to hide them from a close examination. But drugstore foundations that are manufactured by big brands such as CoverGirl, Maybelline, Loreal and others are ridden with oils, chemicals, preservatives and other pore clogging unmentionables.

Caking on these foundations can be more trouble than it's worth because they cause further blemishes and most times major break outs. That's not a scenario that most acne sufferers would associate with happy holidays. So what's the average sufferer to do to avoid this dreaded scenario?

Mineral Makeup is the most popular trend - recommended by dermatologists the world over and used by hollywood celebrities because of it's many benefits to acne sufferers. Mineral makeup is an all natural makeup that is made with minerals from the earth. The minerals are highly water proof so they help to dehydrate and thus kill off the bacteria in your pores that causes cystic acne.

Dermatologists are calling mineral Makeup the skin care makeup because it is so gentle to the skin that you can actually sleep in it. The mineral are ground so fine that they are too small to clog pores. instead they lay on the skin as little flakes that interlace to protect the skin from moisture getting in and feeding acne causing bacteria. The overlying flakes still allow the skin to breathe while shielding off this moisture.

The two primary ingredients in mineral makeup are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. If you read makeup labels then you probably recognize these two minerals. That's because they appear in virtually every sunblock on the market for their full range UV sunblocking abilities. That's right, Mineral Makeup is a natural sunblock as well, which means all that sunlight reflecting off the snow as you build snowmen and go sleding this holiday season is blocked by your mineral makeup. Sumblock is just as important to your skin health in the winter as it is in the summer.

And Mineral Makeup looks fabulous when you wear it. It is delivered to you in powder form and goes on very smoothly, it is so light weight that many people forget they are wearing it. This light weight quality helps it to blend seamlessly into the skin for a beautiful natural look.

Considering the many benefits of using mineral makeup could really help to turn your holidays into the happy holidays we all dream of.

Look fabulous this holiday season with our Natural Mineral Makeup Complete 9 Piece Starter Kit...

    Avoiding Depression

Can you really avoid depression? Is there a way that you can get rid of this awful disease that seems to be taking over your life? For many, the only way to rid their bodies of depression is by taking medications and getting therapy. Both of these things are great ways to work through your depression, but is there a way in which you can avoid it altogether?

Depression is a mind disease. It is usually caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. Sometimes, we refer to ourselves as being depressed when things go wrong. This is not the clinical form of depression, but both of these conditions can feel like the end of the world. The only way to avoid depression or really low times is to simply fight against it by surrounding yourself with good thoughts, experiences and people. Will it cure you of your depression? No, not technically. But, by surrounding yourself with a positive environment filled with positive energy, you may find that the effects that depression has on you is lessened.

Only your doctor can help you overcome depression. But, by placing positiveness within your life, you may be able to lessen the effects depression has. This is never a reason not to see your doctor though. If you would like more information regarding avoiding depression you can seek out the knowledge that is available throughout the internet.

Olive Oil: A Weight Loss Blessing

In Sonoma County each year, there?s a special festival called the Blessing of the Olives. That?s how central olive trees and the foods they yield are to the economy and the eating habits of the region.

Olive oil, the most treasured gift of these blessed trees, is just as central to The Sonoma Diet. There?s probably no food choice you?ll make that does more for your health and weight loss efforts than olive oil.

Which is good news for your taste buds, because no other vegetable oil comes close to olive oil?s rich and pleasing flavor. It?s at the heart of Mediterranean cuisine?s appeal. A dish prepared with olive oil almost seems to announce to anyone who smells or tastes it, ?I?m special.?

    Healthy Fat
The research is clear as can be that a major reason for southern Europeans? low rate of heart disease is their liberal use of olive oil as their main source of dietary fat. By adopting olive oil in the same way, you?ll get the same benefits. And because you?ll learn to enjoy olive oil in healthy amounts in place of the harmful fats you may be used to, you will lose weight.

To appreciate olive oil as a power food, banish from your mind the notion that it?s the ?least bad? fat. It is a heart-healthy food that is good for you. You need dietary fat to lose weight, but you need the right kind. Olive oil is one of the best. Choose extra-virgin olive oil and you?ll also enhance the flavors of your food.

Put simply, the kind of fat that olive oil is mostly made of (monounsaturated fat) actually lowers your levels of the bad LDL cholesterol as well as blood fats called triglycerides. The fats you?ll be avoiding (saturated fat) raise those levels. That right there qualifies olive oil as a power food par excellence.

    A Wealth of Antioxidants
But there?s more. Unique among vegetable oils, olive oil -- particularly extra-virgin olive oil -- is rich in the same family of antioxidant phytonutrients that make all the other power foods on the Top Ten list so effective in preventing heart disease. The same phenols that make olive oil taste so good also make up its main category of antioxidants. Olive oil also contains carotenoids (like beta-carotene) and vitamin E.

In addition, olive oil reduces two other heart disease risks -- high blood pressure and inflammation.

There?s Fat and Then There?s Fat

As the title tells us, not all fats were created alike. There are three naturally occurring types of fat: saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated, as well as one manufactured fat, known as hydrogenated oil (commonly referred to as trans fat).

The majority of the types of fat you should eat come mostly from plant oils. The healthiest are led by monounsaturated fats, such as extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, canola oil, and avocados. Other healthy oils are found in the polyunsaturated category, such as grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, and the omega-3 oils found in some cold-water fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts.

The kind of fat you must limit eating is the saturated fat found mostly in animal foods such as meats and dairy products, as well as those found in palm and coconut oils. This does not mean you can?t eat meat or dairy. You can. But it does mean that you must seek the lean or nonfat versions of meat or dairy foods.

You can recognize saturated fat because it?s solid at room temperature or lower -- the white rimming a steak, the marble in prime rib, the chicken fat that skims a soup in the fridge, a stick of butter. Its primary sin is raising the levels of bad LDL cholesterol in your arteries, inviting heart disease. In fact, saturated fat ups your blood cholesterol more than dietary cholesterol itself. Hydrogenated oils should be avoided because they have far worse effects on your health and heart than saturated fats.

    Why You Need Vitamin A

Recent nutritional research has found that most people do not consume enough Vitamin A on a daily basis. This is not good, because Vitamin A is essential to good health. Major health problems can result from long-term Vitamin A deficiencies.

Vitamin A is essential from the start of life. Pregnant women must be sure to ingest enough Vitamin A, which will be more than they needed before pregnancy, because Vitamin A plays a key role in the proper physical development of a fetus. It helps to sustain proper cell differentiation, which is the specialization of cells upon division to do certain tasks, meaning that cells for the heart take on the heart?s characteristics, those for the liver take on the liver?s, those for the brain take on the brain?s characteristics and functions, and so on. Vitamin A also helps with bone growth and development, as well as in the general growth and development of the body.

Vitamin A has an important part in the quality and functioning of the body?s immune system. One aspect of this functioning has to do with the skin and body?s mucus membranes. The skin and mucus membranes serve a very important purpose for the body. They operate as barriers against bacteria and viruses, protecting against infection and disease. Vitamin A also helps to keep the skin and mucus membranes healthy, functioning, and able to serve their primary purpose.

As we all know, carrots are good for the eyes. That is because they are overflowing with Vitamin A, which is essential to vision. Believe it or not, a serious deficiency in Vitamin A can result in blindness. Many children living in poverty in third world countries throughout the world have become blind simply because of the lack of Vitamin A in their diets.

Vitamin A also helps to keep the surface linings of the intestinal, urinary and respiratory tracts healthy. This benefit offers protection from bacteria, as well has promotes proper functioning.

One of the most common units of measure for Vitamin A found on food and supplement packaging labels is the International Unit, or IU. Adult and teenage males should be consuming around 3,000 IU of Vitamin A per day. Adult women and teenage females should take in about 2,310 IU per day, 2,565 IU per day if pregnant and 4,300 IU per day when breastfeeding. For children ages 8 to 13, 2,000 IU is the recommended daily intake, with 1,320 IU being enough for those aged 4 through 7. From birth through age 3, 1,000 IU is recommended.

Taking dietary supplements to round out a healthy diet can ensure that the body receives the nutrients it needs for peak performance. However, it is always important to follow label and doctor recommendations for the proper amount to be taken for your dietary needs.

Proper nutrition is essential to achieving and maintaining health. It is much better to avoid sickness than to recover from it. Taking steps to ensure that you are getting enough Vitamin A each day is an essential part of reaching your health goals.

Why This Research Was Covered Up and Buried How Focal Infection Theory Disbelievers Brought On

The fight against the focal infection theory was mainly carried out by Doctors Percy Howe and John buckley.

Howe based his opposition on a study he conducted injecting rabbits with normal placid streptococcus bacteria secured from the mouth, not bacteria from an infection site or a root filled tooth.

In his investigation, none of the animals became sick or died. Buckley was unable to see how infected teeth which showed excellent evidence of bone repair after root canal therapy could possibly still be infectec. Then too, because some who had root filled teeth removed did not recover, he questioned the validity of the conclusion that a percentage of patients did get well due to the removal of a tooth or teeth.

The arguments of these two men were weak and they failed to consider or believe:

That poor nutrition and inherited genetic problems are also causes of degenerative diseases.

That oral bacteria do not act in the same manner as do the germs that cause measles, smallpox, mumps, scarlet fever, etc.

That when teeth become infected, oral bacteria find the dentin tubules an ideal cave-like hiding place, and these germs and their toxins- like the viruses that cause cancer - metastasize and escape to infect hearts, joints, kidneys, lungs, the stomach, eyes, and countless other tissues.

That what makes these bacteria so dangerious is their ability to become polymorphic; that is, to mutate, adapt, change, become smaller, anaerobic, more virulent, and more toxic.

That pregnant women or others experiencing a higher than normal degree of stress become particularly susceptible to diseases arising from oral infection sources.

By the mid-thirties, most physicians and dentists believed the focal infection theory to be correct and valid.

With the advent of penicillin, there arose the belief that antibiotics could cure all these problems, and little is heard today about focal infections.

    Death Aging Rejuvenation (Part 2)

    Death

Death. Why it happens? Why do we die? Why do animals die? Why do plants die? What is the need of this? In my opinion mechanism of death was selected during Evolution.

From the position of Darwin's theory of Natural Selection everything, that benefits survival of species and gives advantage in Natural Selection, is preserved in following generations.

Improvements were often left unchanged from the moment of life appearance. Though there could be other ways, certain mechanisms were accidentally selected. These improvements are reproduced in the genome of more complex species. Billions of years ago, according to the theory of evolution, chemicals randomly organized themselves into a self-replicating molecule.

Lightings and UV-radiation helped to create first organic molecules. This phenomenon is reproducible in a lab. The experiments were described in 1950-60.

First self-replicating molecules were probably RNA. First enzymes were probably RNA - enzymes. Then proteins, DNA and more complex lipid molecules and polysaccharide came to the scene.

Death as it is did not exist at the stage of Primeval Soup . Sure some organic molecules were destroyed , some new created. But in general it was still that swirling and bubbling primary broth - quasi alive in our understanding as a mixture of biochemical reactions.

Everything in the evolution was build from the previous blocks selected sometime by accident.

Appearance of lipid membranes allows to compartmentalize the primary broth and create first cells.

At the cellular stage we could already talk about the Death. Cell is destroyed, membrane is broken, everything leaked out. This is the Death.

Content of cell inside lipid membrane is irradiated. Process of crazy molecular swirling is messed up by free radicals irreversibly. This is also signs of Death.

Yet at the cellular stage we cannot talk about Aging. Death at this stage is accidental, not programed.

Organic molecules may age (oxidation, conjugation, etc.) and cell would die. But damaged molecule are repaired or synthesized fresh usually. Hence, no good reason for a single cell organism to age. Irreparable damage from external cause leads to Death, not Aging. This is accidental death. For multicellular organisms, there is a parental organism that ages and eventually dies after next generation is born. For mono-cellular organism, there is parental organism that divides and becomes the next generation. There is no Aging leading to death of parental organism.

Mono-cellular organisms are practically immortal in a right environment.

Mechanism of division was selected during evolution. Cell has volume (3-D). Surface membrane is measured in square units (2-D). Growing beyond limits cause inadequate supply of nutrition from environment. Division solves the problem.

Microbes, bacteria are immortal. Some divide every 20 minutes. In a an hour they multiply 8 times.

Tumour cells divide slower. They are eukaryote. Most aggressive divide once a day. There is no need for Aging.

They would die if you do not feed them. They die when you kill them with undiluted bleach in a flask. Otherwise they grow unstoppable. No aging.

Multicellular organism supposedly has several control mechanisms to prevent excessive growth and division, to kill an extra cell. Apoptosis, programmed death, is used.

Cancer cells often loose the control mechanisms.

A scientist from Yale once pointed out to me that we can not say these cells are immortal. Maybe they divide and parental cell dies. Indeed. We do not follow the fate of every individual cell during experiments. They should give more children cells than parental cells die. Otherwise there would not be the multiplication. It is a possible scenario. We do not follow the fate of individual bacteria as well. Maybe they actually undergo aging.

From the other hand some experiments suggest that new cells contain roughly half of the parent cell after division. So it is not Death or Aging. Next generations contain 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and so on of the parent cell. Any mechanism that is more complex than simple division would cause disadvantage in evolution and would be quickly eliminated. On the level of mono-cellular organism neither Aging nor Apoptosis make a lot of sense. Though Nature often have hidden reasons.

Flick's phenomenon and telomeres shortening make sense for a multicellular organism. Cells of multicellular organism do age. They stop dividing after 70 divisions or so.

A multi-cell organism has clear cut advantage over a mono-cell.

Why would mechanism of Death selected for multicellular organisms? Scenario could be the following.

Big organism have more advantages compare to smaller one - stability, protection, etc. There are not so many natural enemies for whale or elephant because of their size. Large animals could be brought down by bacteria, viruses, small parasites, and lack of available food. Rare predator attack whale or elephant.

No wonder that evolution was going into the direction of bigger animals - just look at giant bones of dinosaurs and you will feel some appreciation.

Millions years ago not only Dinosaurs but also insects or crustacean were enormous. Cockroaches, spiders or dragon flies with size of one metre (3 feet). Going back in time we find shells of enormous molluscs. Many things imply that bigger animal with unstoppable growth have a lot of advantages compare to small ones. New species often evolve in their size. An example is growth acceleration in humans. Females prefer taller mates that lead to taller children. Shorter plants usually cannot compete with the taller forms in the wild. A short mutant in a patch of tall plants would be shaded out

Mechanism of reproduction was also selected during the evolution. Any new animal, be it a mouse or a human, starts life as a single cell. That cell differentiates and develops into the complete animal. It assures that a rare advantageous variant sequence of DNA will be rapidly propagated by natural selection. It is much easier to reproduce and maybe get some new genes or favourable mutations starting from a single cell than starting from a whole multicellular organism. Functions of most genes will have been optimized by random point mutation and selection in any given species. Signalling between cells during the development process ensure that everything ends up in the right place. Tiny changes in these Signalling processes can have very large effects on the resulting animal. Genome, with at most forty-sixty thousands genes, is able to specify the creation of a human body containing trillions of cells, billions of carefully wired neurons and hundreds of different cell types all amazingly sculpted into organs as diverse as the liver and the brain. This is why mechanism of proliferation of fertilized oocytes was selected.

Hence, having younger (smaller) and older (bigger) animals make sense.

But there is the problem: adult animals (or plants) consume all the nutrition around and there is not much left for next generation.

Then it is why mechanism of Death was selected as a mean for next generation to establish.

    Imagine the following:

First, mechanism of proliferation was selected . If mono-cellular organism does not have mechanism of reproduction it does not produce offspring with possible favourable mutations. Let say there are primitive bacteria spontaneously created in primeval soup. Just few of them. They consume nutrition, they live happily, practically immortal but they do not divide. Then set of enzymes appeared during mutations. The set allows bacteria to split. Synthesis of the new set is disadvantageous. It requires additional energy and nutrition. But advantage of splitting allows new mutants immediately overgrow non-proliferating cells. Selection is really cutthroat.

Bacteria growing in a tube represent mini evolution. Any bacteria that fit for the environment are also selected on the ground of simplicity. In a toxic environment (antibiotics) mutant bacteria having a new mechanism of neutralisation would survive. But the more simple bacteria will eventually overgrow complicated ones. Unless complication gives big advantage that outweigh the benefits of simplicity. Another example: HIV virus is very complex compare to some other viruses. But because of the complexity it evades immune response. This is why it is so successful. For humans there was some discussion that hernias are direct problem of erect posture. So erect posture leads to disadvantage. From the other hand erect posture frees the hand, that allows to produce the tools and this gives huge advantage in the survival in natural world by creating possibility to adapt to virtually any condition.

All high animals have just 4 extremities. Obviously it is enough in cutthroat environment. Growing additional couple of extremities will consume much more resources and take much more time, not giving big advantage in speed or protection of an animal. Thus, danger of losing one of the limb is not so big as the danger to not proliferate fast enough.

Bilateral design of majority of animals was chosen at the level of primitive species. Though lower multicellular organisms may have 3-side symmetry or 5-side symmetry like sea stars. Often something chosen in the selection becomes building blocks for higher species. Maybe 5-side symmetrical tiger would be possible but it requires intermediate chain.

The same is true for the mechanism of Death. Once chosen, it is replicated in all higher organisms. It should give an advantage in ultimate species survival. Otherwise it loses sense and species would be wiped out.

So, what is advantage for Death?

Immortal and childless animals are growing and growing. Mutations lead to species producing offsprings. They have disadvantage of been more complex. But advantage of proliferating animals is occupation of vaster areas. They displace immortal and childless species. Now, if proliferating animals are immortal they do not give offsprings enough space or food. Next steps of mutation brought mechanism of programmed death at certain age.

Let consider situation when out of two species one is immortal and producing offsprings, other is mortal with offspring production as well. Mortality looks like an obvious disadvantage in stable environment. Adult organism are more powerful and more protected compare to juvenile.

However, next catastrophe will wipe out all the species altogether. Only some mutants can adopt to new environment. But mutant for a multicellular organism imply that the mutation happened when the organism had only one cell (the stage of fertilized oocyte for example). Otherwise it needs precisely the same mutations on the level of several cells - infinitely impossible event.

Thus, any species that had the mechanism to allow next generation to flourish (mechanism of programmed Death) will have advantage. They produce more offspring than immortal species. Death of parents spares the space and nutrition. Immortals can die form accidents only. It is too long for children to expect a vacancy.

Then, having more offspring automatically means having more mutations (by mere number of events). Having more mutations means more probability for adaptation to the new environment.

Immortal multicellular organisms, even if they existed in the past, were quickly wiped out by accidents and overgrown by mortal multicellular organisms.

Again all this is just a hypothesis.

    Atkins & LowCarb Part 4

Since so many people in the United States are currently in the middle of a carb-frenzy, this series of articles has focused on the pros and cons of the low-carb diet. Topics of discussion have been 1) Can you stick with a low-carb diet for the long term, 2) Conflicting messages about carbs and 3) bodybuilders and low-carb dieting.

This article will define and describe carbohydrates and what role they play in the human body.

Carbohydrate - Chemical compound of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, usually with the hydrogen and oxygen in the right proportions to form water. Common forms are starches, sugars, cellulose, and gums. Carbohydrates are more readily used for energy production than are fats and proteins. One of the three basic foodstuffs (proteins and fats are the others), carbohydrates are a group of chemical substances including sugars, glycogen, starches, dextrins, and cellulose. They comprise the body's main source of raw material for energy. Carbohydrates can be classified as either a simple carbohydrate or a complex carbohydrate.

Digested carbohydrate enters the circulatory system in the form of monosaccharides, primarily glucose. Lesser amounts of fructose and galactose are also absorbed, but these are eventually converted into glucose in the liver. Before they can be absorbed into the bloodstream, polysaccharides and disaccharides must be broken down into monosaccharides by specific enzymes during the digestive process.

When you comsume carbohydrates, your digestive system converts them to blood sugar (glucose). This glucose is stored in your muscle cells and in your liver. Your brain operates with the help of glucose in your blood as energy. When training is intense, glycogen stored within your muscles provides most of the energy for contractions. When training with low intensity, your blood-borne sugar acts as an energy source. A PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN THERE IS LEFTOVER GLUCOSE IN YOUR BLOOD FOLLOWING A REFILL OF CARBOHYDRATE STORES. THE REMAINING CARBOHYDRATES ARE STORED AS FAT.

There are several types of carbohydrates, some better than others. Starch, sugar and dextrose are all types of carbohydrates. The three main types of carbohydrates are:
    * Monosaccharides (one-sugar molecule)
    * Disaccharides (two-sugar molecule)
    * Polysaccharides (three or more sugar molecules)

Monosaccharides and disaccharides are commonly called sugars, while polysaccharides are called complex carbohydrates or glucose polymers. Some of the more commonly encountered carbohydrates in these three categories include the following: * Monosaccharides: glucose, fructose, sorbitol, galactose, mannitol, mannose * Disaccharides: sucrose = glucose + fructose; maltose = glucose + glucose; lactose = glucose + galactose * Polysaccharides: Starch, dextrin, cellulose and glycogen, all of which are made of chains of glucose. Found in whole grains, vegetables, nuts, some fruits and legumes. Fibers are mainly the indigestible complex carbohydrates (polysaccharides) that make up plant cell walls.

The Glycemic Index is a handy rating system that tells you what carbohydrates provide the best energy for prolonged training periods. By consuming a food with a low glycemic rating, you will experience a more stabilized blood sugar level.

Remember, carbohydrates are your body's preferred energy fuel source, although fats work well too., particularly during aerobic training. Remember that protein and carbohydrates both have 4 calories per gram, while fat has 9 calories per gram.
